Regarding the Fire Tower Lookout

Elliot Lake Firetower 2

Located just on the outskirts of Elliot Lake is the Fire Tower Lookout . An elevation of one thousand feet above sea level provides an expansive view of the Elliot Lake area. On clear days, one can see to Lake Huron’s North Channel and Manitoulin Island. The remains of the original fire tower stands as a testament to those who made the long climb up & spent long solitary vigils on top of that metal frame.

A view of Porridge Lake and part of “The New Townsite” ( which is now over 30 years old) can be seen from the Lookout. The bit of water visible in the foreground is Spillane Lake. ( See: Toward the Horizon – Manitoulin )

I would have the same trouble getting anywhere near the first couple of rungs. 😀
They had to remove the actual little cabin and ladder to prevent foolish people from attempting the climb – too much liability. It would have been nice if they could have built something closer to the height for a viewing platform.
