The Mountain Ash is also known as the Rowan tree. Yeats makes reference to the rowan tree/berries in several poems. The Ancient Bards considered the Rowan the ‘Tree of Bards’, bringing the gift of inspiration. The poem with its mythic imagery is about poetic inspiration & calling and the passage of time.
