Winter – Early March

Winter Early March W1

Winter Early March W2

To put these shots in perspective, most of this winter has been very mild with sudden dips and swings in temperatures. Tonight there is a prediction of minus 22 Celsius. That is ten degrees below normal night time temperatures for this time of year. By next Monday/Tuesday we are expected to have plus 6 Celisus , which is eight degrees above daytime highs. Rain is supposed to accompany this rise in temperature. Where the water goes is anybody’s guess.

  1. Are those temperature fluctuations ‘normal’?

Here in England, we had the mildest Winter since records began in 1910.

No , but they are seeming to be turning into the new normal. Our winter, along with much of the rest of Canada has been mild. Snow did not arrive in our area in any significant amount till January. The slow freezing of the lakes resulted in the cancelling of the Ice Fishing Derby. Conditions of the ice were closer to the end of March rather than late February.

London Ontario , in the southern part of the province, has been like spring or the start of winter most of the season. Some days my son is able to take out the bike. Recently it went from plus ten to a major snow storm ( lots of wind ,freezing drizzle and a small amount of snow) within just a couple of days. It is sitting at zero and will jump up to plus eleven in a couple of days with rain. When my wife grew up in London it was known as part of the snow belt.

      • Interesting. Perhaps it is something to do with El Nino. I know the jet stream has been doing some strange things.

That is what the weather experts are saying. We are heading into a very mild spring – early in many portions of the country. 🙂
