Wall Art ~ Findlay Bros. Co. Fang-Face

Wall Art Findlay BroCo frm

Here is more of the wall art by Natasha and her respite worker, Cora. The Fang-face girl is Draculaura from Monster High.  For background on the metal door see my Findlay Bros. Co. post .

The juxtaposition Monster High referenced graphics and the Findlay Bros. door really emphasized the way Mass Media recombines to create new forms of media and referencing other media forms  & content. Consider the following points on expanding media development.

Natasha enjoys costumes & crazy makeup, dancing and dolls. My daughter became aware of Monster High through YouTube, that ubiquitous Mass Media transferral platform.  The Monster High Franchise actually began as a Mattel fashion doll line in 2010. It expanded quickly into other accessory items and a website with games, webisodes, plus other downloads & online activities. It also spawned a couple of song/dance videos – music available from iTunes.

Of course the whole franchise is referencing the monster film tradition that goes back to Universal Movies, which itself derives from the Gothic Tradition in Literature. It should be fitting then, that a young adult novel series has also come been published, so that it all comes full circle; Mass Media is the snake that eats its own “tale”, Necro-media.

So the wall art, images & this post repurpose media content and conventions. I used antique/aged photograph styles in creating the images, thereby extending the conversion and combination of other media forms and content. Consider this in closing, are the dolls toys/objects or are they another form of media? Is the metal door simply embossed with manufacturer information or is it a form of media conveying information? Where are the lines between media, message and object? How blurred do the lines become until everything is information & Mass Media ?

Surreal Thursday: Memorex Memories

Memorex Memories

This Surreal Thursday is an Antique Impression of some Necro-media. Here is a Memorex Video Box label stuck to cabinet door. Was it that long ago when videos referred to video tape ? I remember when VHS was king and an easy access to a variety of resources for teaching & entertainment. Now it is as antique as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. If it is not memory is it real ? Or is it Memorex Necro-media?

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) (Watch) is one of the most influential of German Expressionist films and is often considered being one of the greatest horror movies of the silent era cinema.  The image below is Dr. Caligari’s Cabinet of Spoonerisms. A spoonerism is an error in speech or deliberate play on words in which corresponding consonants, vowels, or morphemes are switched, between two words in a phrase; for example saying “The Lord is a shoving leopard.” instead of “The Lord is a loving shepherd.” The Reverend William Archibald Spooner (1844–1930), Warden of New College, Oxford, was so notoriously prone to this mistake that his name became forever linked to both the intentional and unintentional spoonerism. The Reverend Spooner & Dr. Calagari are now forever linked in the surreal Necro-media of this blog post.

Note: The Somnambulist is a 2007 fantasy/horror novel set in the late Victorian period, and is the debut novel by Jonathan Barnes . It takes the movie as part of its inspiration. The protagonists Edward Moon, a conjurer and detective, and his silent partner The Somnambulist, a milk-drinking giant who does not bleed when stabbed, are called to investigate a murder that may tie to the poetry and prophecies of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the fate of London.

The Doll in The Wall

Doll in the Wall

Upon the discovery of The Doll in the Wall, Dr. Ignatius Walter-Jons was trembling. Here was the evidence to validate his theory about the last days of Lost Vegas . Not only was the artifact proof of the Simulacra Epidemic, it also linked the event to The Singularity Wave of 2047. Furthermore, the wall itself showed signs that the “Children of Yig” virus must have established itself in the region within a couple of decades following the city’s demise.

His colleagues praised Dr. Walter-Jons’s accomplishment. His research and the new evidence shed light on a dark area of human history. It was with great reluctance that they returned The Doll to the Wall, but it seemed like the best thing to do,……. after they found their esteemed friend’s bare arm bones & skull covered in peculiar small teeth marks. Curiously, they never did find the rest of his remains. However, the whole affair did prove the old proverb true, ” What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

Antique Impression: Lamp

Lamp2 mtt

The faint sound of The Crying Child could be heard as he passed the wall lamp hanging by the stairs. When he took a few more steps the sound faded away to be replaced by foot-steps moving across the landing just above him. In spite of the cold air hanging like a damp sheet, he continued moving. After all, having done this countless times before, he knew there would be no one there when he reached the top of the stairs.

Unfortunately, this time proved to be different. He let out a low moan upon reaching the landing. A small grey cat stared up at him as he bent down to pick up the torn letter in the twisted light of the lamp. The rustling sound of an approaching gowned figure told him he wouldn’t have time to read the pages right now.

He was still clutching the blank papers when they found him in the morning. Delirious and unsteady, he mumbled that the words were clear in the lamp light. He went to Mexico shortly there after. The frequency and intensity of his migraines were much less when he stayed there on the coast. At least, that is what he claimed.
