Screen Adjustments

Screen Adjustment 1

In the past, dominant media broadcast or narrow-cast to a select target audience. There was little in the way of direct & immediate response from that audience. They could turn on & off the particular  media or set it aside. Now the audience can interact and respond to those who are sending out their message. It becomes a conversation. Furthermore, it becomes possible for this personal communication to be monitored by third parties.  To survive we must make a screen adjustment and keep an eye on our media consumption and production.

One of my hobby-horses when I was still teaching was how the present education system is so far behind the ball when it came to understanding media literacy. They still treated printed text ( text books) as primary media and the rest of mass media as an auxiliary to printed text. Not only was it failing to acquire sufficient mass media technology skills for the majority of the teachers, it failed to see the massive cultural & learning shift that was taking place in society. It neither prepared the teachers or the students effectively.

In the meantime, the young are learning to read & write online (digital text) not on paper ( printed text). They are not just consumers of mass media, they are producers, composers, and unfortunately, content of mass media (Rehtaeh Parsons).
