Canada Postage Due

Canada Post MT

Canada Post Stamp

For those unaware of the current situation here in Canada, the Canada Post is phasing out door-to-door delivery of regular mail to urban residents and increasing the cost of postage in a major move to try to reduce significant, regular losses. There are those who are attempting to alter this course of action. The Conservative Party, which holds the balance of power in the parliament,  is supporting this “cost saving approach”. Some say they are trying to position the postal service to become a private operation.  Some say that those trying to fight  this turn of events are just spinning  their political wheels and the Canada Post will soon become history.

  1. Our Mail has now been privatised….no longer sure what the future holds for what as been a lifeline service across the U.K.. As part of their plan they seem to think that increasing prices will drive more business their way….with good completion around for packages I fail to see that working. So for letter mail we are starting to be held to ransom. All this is written up by politicians as ‘progress’….what no one has told them is that progress goes backwards as well as forwards

I had heard about the Royal Post. Would not be surprised if our “guvs” used that as excuse to push their agenda here. There are a group of politicians & business heads that moved from the ME generation to the Mean generation. They boast about cutting taxes, which means cutting jobs, cutting (rationalizing) services and privatizing. Somehow the taxes never go down significantly and the privatized services are more limited and more expensive. Charles Dickens and the Victorian social reformers are weeping and those who lived through the Dirty Thirties are spinning in the here-after.

Having seen how this cost cutting efficiency & rationalization works in the education system, I have no faith in any of the promises that this will somehow be better. Looking forward to your post.

Thanks very much. More and more, I seem to remember a world that is fading away. No wonder I end-up dwelling on Antique Impressions and Steampunk Fantasies.

No, we are are caught up in the hardening of the social arteries & the corroding of the national soul. Under the current governing party there is a meanness of spirit that has infected the social discourse from parliament down to the mundane routines of Canadian life. The Conservative’s version of climate change.

  2. You could easily have been describing the U.S. in your response to Ashley. I was very depressed about the turn of events here too for a long time. I finally gave it up. I am determined not to squander the rest of my life gnawing on a bone that I cannot chew. I hope the conservative swing of mood in both countries doesn’t do us irreparable harm…

So true. On the positive note our Conservative party is starting to slip in the polls a bit. The Hard C supporters are expecting more, while the soft ones are finally seeing the true character of Harper & how it has shaped the governing party’s approach to so many aspects of political discourse & Canadian life.
In terms of postal delivery, just image having mobility issues/senior and having to access a community mailbox in our winter weather – not a dreamy Christmas card image. 😦
